DO SKATERS TRAIN ON THE BANKED OR FLAT TRACK?

We have programs that train on both surfaces. When you start attending Beginner Roller Derby practices, you will be able to practice your skills on the banked and flat track so that you can play with the all the programs of Derby United, including SoCal Derby and CalSquad.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED TO PLAY?

All roller derby programs require use of quad roller skates, helmet, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards.  Mouth guards are required for contact.

Rental skates are available at no extra charge and rental protective gear is available for $5 per practice.

Ready to get your own gear?  Need help with recommendations?  Go see our friends and very knowledgable skate and gear specialists at Sin City Skates in person at their Kearny Mesa San Diego location or online.

HOW MUCH DOES THE COST?
Derby practices are $12 per session or $90 for an Unlimited Monthly Membership that includes all derby practices offered, as well as any regularly scheduled Public Skate or Instructed Class at Ringer’s Roller Rink.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Flat Track Derby Training

STEP ONE

ORIENTATION

Join us for a New Skater Orientation. We are recruiting new and returning skaters to our San Diego roller derby programs.  No experience necessary. Attend our next no-cost informational orientation and see a derby scrimmage in-person and find more about the Derby United programs.

Want to attend a free info session? Scroll to the bottom of this page and fill out the inquiry form to receive communications about our next monthly orientation.

STEP TWO

PRACTICES

Newer to skating?  Still brushing up on the basics?  We recommend all skaters start at Learn + Return to Skate recreational instructed class at Ringer’s Roller Rink. Once you have passed all of those skills or if you already have mastery of basic skating sills, you’ll head to Beginner Roller Derby to get the fundamentals of derby skate skills and learn full contact roller derby. Finally, you’ll make your way to league practices with SoCal (WFTDA), Derby United Wildfires and CalSquad (gender inclusive).

STEP THREE

PLAY IN ROLLER DERBY BOUTS

Once you’ve gained mastery of the skills and rules of the game, you are ready to start playing roller derby!  You’ll have the option of playing with one or more of our programs at Derby United with weekly scrimmages and then bi-monthly games on both the banked and flat tracks.  You’ll be out there playing full contact roller derby for a screaming crowd of fans!
